Asansol: Dr Debashis haldar, chief medical officer of health (Asansol), has formed a three member team to probe into the incident where a two and a half months old baby's right hand had to be amputated on Tuesday due to the negligence of Asansol District Hospital.
Haldar told TOI on Tuesday that he had visited the Asansol District Hospital with various concerned people.
"The child specialist Dr. Ashis Kumar Ghosh has been show-caused and has been sent on leave. The nursing superintendent, Surabhi Mukherjee has also been show-caused," he added. The doctor said that he will send his final report to the state director of health services within a couple of days.
On 26 January, Ankush Sit son of Jayanta Sit, a poor bus worker of Ballavpur in Raniganj admitted his son to pediatric ward of Asansol District Hospital with breathing problem. He has been suffering from pneumonia and chest infection. The nurses made a channel to give him saline on his right hand after tying a tourniquet (rubber tube on his right elbow).
On 28 January, the child specialist, Dr. Ashis Kumar Ghosh found that the child's right hand has become blue. He also informed the surgeon and the emergency doctor on duty, but they also found nothing abnormal. Later, the relatives found that the tourniquet that was tied to his elbow has not been loosened and that prevented blood from circulating, which led to septicaemia of the right hand.
Susanta Mondal, the uncle of the victim said that the super had referred them to SSKM Hospital, where his right hand had to be amputated from above the elbow. "He will be admitted in the ICU for the next seven days We want compensation for the victim,"he added.
